Définitions

Active materials and articles : materials and articles that are intended to extend the shelf-life or to maintain or improve the condition of packaged food; they are designed to deliberately incorporate components that would release or absorb substances into or from the packaged food or the environment surrounding the food.

Intelligent materials and articles : materials and articles which monitor the condition of packaged food or the environment surrounding the food.



Inertness criteria to be met


 

- Substances used to manufacture the material authorized by positive lists (lists of food additives or specific rules for active compounds, EU positive lists for others);
- Migration of active compounds not recognized in the results of overall migration;
- Release of active compounds permitted until thresholds allowed in foods.
